What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)?

Helping You See Results

What is EDMR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a unique integrative psychotherapy approach that’s very effective in treating trauma, stress and anxiety.

Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, EMDR incorporates elements from various treatment philosophies to address psychological distress.

Initially established to alleviate symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), EMDR has gained extensive recognition in the medical community, backed by a wealth of research that shows its transformative impact on individuals struggling with the lived symptoms of traumatic experiences.

Unlike conventional talking therapies, EMDR delves deeper, aiming to untangle the intricate webs of trauma enveloped within the brain's neural networks, offering a pathway to lasting healing and emotional freedom.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR uses a technique called bilateral stimulation to repeatedly activate both sides of the brain. This is done using eye movements that resemble the rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep, a critical period associated with the mind's processing of recent life events.

This innovative method is designed to help the brain reprocess trapped memories, enabling normal information processing to be resumed.

The journey through EMDR is structured yet deeply empathetic, allowing individuals to explore and reprocess beliefs and traumatic experiences.

EMDR is a transformative process that helps to dismantle distress and reinstate a sense of control and equilibrium in the individuals’ lives.

Who might benefit from EMDR?

While initially recognized for its effectiveness in treating PTSD resulting from life-threatening events, the versatility of EMDR has unfolded over the years, showcasing its adaptability in addressing many conditions.

EMDR may help people experiencing:

  • Panic attacks

  • Grief

  • Loss

  • Disturbing memories and events

  • Phobias

  • Anxiety

  • Stress

  • Trauma

  • Sexual, emotional and/or physical abuse
